General Information
The location of Hong Kong is located on the south east coast of China, it consists of a large number of islands and a part of the mainland totaling approximately 1,064 sq km. The population of Hong Kong is about 7 million people. Official languages are Chinese and English, the last one being used in the commercial and political context, and Chinese Cantonese widely used in industry and domestic trade.
Political system
On 1 July 1997 Hong Kong reverted from the control of Great Britain back to China, and became a Special Administration Region "SAR" within the People's Republic of China (PRC). According to the principle “one country – two systems”, the SAR has executive, legislative and independent judicial power. That means that Hong Kong elects its own legislature and maintains its own court structure. The capitalist system, legal structure and lifestyle remain unchanged.
Economy
Hong Kong is a free port with a free capital flow and a freely convertible Hong Kong dollar which is officially pegged to the US Dollar. When the People's Republic of China announced the course on the modernization of its own economy, it supposed that Hong Kong could assist the country in this. The future development of Hong Kong had to be based on market reforms with the characteristics of socialism, and this has led to the opening up of its economy to foreign investments.
Hong Kong is the leading commercial and financial centre in South East Asia, and it ranks as the world's third largest financial centre after New York and London. There is no exchange control. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is the most active in Asia outside Japan.
Infrastructure
It is considered that Hong Kong is and will continue to be a significant gateway to China. Hong Kong has excellent communication facilities and a major international airport. Victoria Harbour, which separates Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula, is internationally recognized as one of the world's most perfect natural harbours, and the port of Hong Kong is probably the busiest in the world.
Legal System
Hong Kong has a well-established legal system with Common Law based on English Common Law. Principal corporate legislation is Companies Ordinance.
